Kuala Lumpur

Hi All,

Having heard mixed opinions about how long to say in Kuala Lumpur (ranging from a night to a whole week) we weren’t sure what to expect from the capital city. Much like the rest of Malaysia, we found it to be bursting with activity and a blend of cultures. Again we chose to stay in Chinatown for its bustling markets and delicious food but were just a few minutes walk away from the gold shops and Hindu temples in Little India. It was a fantastic place to end a wonderful month in Malaysia.

The juxtaposition of old and new was evident throughout the city; faded Chinese shop fronts nestled beneath a modern metro line, all dwarfed by colonial masterpieces and colossal skyscrapers. The tallest buildings in Kuala Lumpur are the twin Petronas towers, offices to the petroleum company of the same name. We visited this spectacular pair by night. Danielle enjoyed watching the colourful water fountain show at the park beneath them while Ross as usual took on the role of photographer. The following evening we couldn’t resist going back for another glimpse; this time we watched from the comforts of a sky bar with cocktails in hand. It was nice to get dressed up for a change and watch the city light up as it got dark. Starkly different but equally as impressive were the Mughal style buildings with beautiful bronze domes built during the colonial era. Merdeka Square now the centre of the impressive historical buildings was once used a a cricket pitch by the British. Surrounding the square were: Masjid Jamed Mosque, the National Textile Museum (former railway works) and Kuala Lumpur City Gallery.

The city of contrasts continued... Nestled in the centre is KL Eco Park, an original jungle that has been protected from any development. Walking through the canopy trail was pretty bizarre. One moment we were surrounded by the sound of bird calls and insects and the next a megaphone and the noise of construction filled the air. Similarly, all around us were the towering trees of the jungle until there was a gap in the canopy revealing nearby skyscrapers.

As we had working WiFi for first time in a couple of weeks, we took the opportunity to update the blog (very behind by this stage) and book places to stay for our onward travel. We have a busy couple of weeks and 5 flights coming up! We are flying to Surabaya in Indonesia where we plan to visit Bromo volcano for a few nights. Then to southern Borneo for a house boat trip to see orangutans before heading back to Java for an overnight stop in Jakarta. Last but not least, we are flying to Singapore to meet Ross’ parents! We are all too aware that time is flying past and that we will be home before we know it so we are making sure we see as much of this amazing continent as we can in the couple of months we have left!

Love R and D xxx
